Foraging in Elanthia

COMPILED AND WRITTEN FOR WILLOW HALL
by Trini Sadoris

Artwork from Dungeons and Dragons. Part of the fun of foraging is the knowledge of where to look and having that sovyn clove in your herb satchel when your friend is missing an arm. That look of awe as you pull out the string of herbs that will not only heal the wound but also regrow the arm is very gratifying. The real reason I forage is because I don't see much sense in running to town for every little hurt when most of the herbs grow outside of town, and everything I need is right under my nose.... Ermmm toes that is. Elanthia, wide land that it is, contains towns where foraging isn't an option due to extremes in terrain. For that reason I will include the Icemule, Teras Island, and Pinefar equivalents of each herb (if an equivalent exists.)

The eating of Herbs requires a round time (reaction time) for each; timeto chew or time to choke it down if someone is trying to get you to move before you are quite able. Herbs for removing scars being the longest to chew. Chewing RT goes down as you gain levels. When you chew acantha at age one it will take you the whole 10 seconds, but by 30 it's down to 1 second per chew. You'll notice the herbs that start with the smaller RTs will be the ones to go down first and the ones with the larger RTs will take the longest to go down.

To make this guide I had the help of my fellows in Willow Hall, and the descriptions of where the herbs can be found are from Surety's Primer of Herbs and Exotic Fruits. I also used the guide by Taru [HERBS, POTIONS, FORAGING, AND HEALING] to add in some areas I have yet to get into. Foraging the new ground in Solhaven was a real lesson, and Surety's descriptions helped me there a lot. Being one of the firsts in finding spots to get things was fun. The effort makes you realize that part of the fun is in the hunting for things, and for that reason I will not give specific rooms. I also believe that if you are half-dead and have no herbs and you are a ranger-- SHAME ON YOU! You should have them at hand before you need them. That said let’s get to it.

ACANTHA LEAF: Restores 10 HP It can be found in a wide range of climates-- from near desert conditions to moist ocean beaches. Acantha leaf grows just about everywhere outside North Gate, beach areas and the coastal cliffs. In Solhaven it can be found in South beach area. I haven't had to forage much of this since the critters I hunt seem to drop wads of it so far, so I haven't looked real hard.

Icemule: Iceberry tart Teras Island: Olaks Old Style Ale Pinefar: Acantha Leaf Tea

CUCTUCAE BERRY: Restores 10 HP The bushes can be found growing wild in higher elevations, and seem to thrive in cooler areas. I know this grows in hob land and I found it in the Tor Aganrhic Ravine area and in the silverback orc area in Icemule, but since berries can't be bundled (and I prefer bundles) I don't forage them. If you can handle the weight the berries would be good for you since there is no RT eating them. You can sometimes find cuctucae berries, marallis berries or wolifrew lichen in the same locations you can find sticks. Surety's descriptions are very good for getting you looking in the right spots.

MARALLIS BERRY: Restores 10 HP. The plants are most commonly found in colder hills and mountains. This berry is the only thing I ever found in Ice mule and it's handy up there if you run out of acantha it is found in the silverback orc area outside east gate there. I found this in the saddle on the way to Solhaven and I have heard you can get it on the glacier as well but haven't tried due to wanting to live to see my next training and the berry thing again. If you can handle the extra weight they are an option.

YABATHILIUM FRUIT: Restores 5-50 HP It grows on beaches and saltwater coastlines. Found outside North Gate, the garden in River's Rest, The sandy path in Solhaven as well as the south beach area.

Teras Island: Krolvin Bloody Ale Pinefar: Sassafras Tea

COTHINAR FLOWER: Restores 15-60 HP Usually found in colder barren areas as they thrive in the winter and do not like having competion for their nutrients. Look in the Briar patch on the way to kobold village, outside the Abandoned Inn, Glatoph

STRIGAE CACTUS: Restores 30 HP The small cacti grow abundantly in desert conditions - There is no proven documentation that this herb has ever been successfully foraged.

AMBROMINAS LEAF: Heals minor limb wounds. This can be found in grasslands and hilly areas. Upper Trollfang, Lower Dragonsclaw-grasslands, Lyserian Hills- Ruined Village, the garden in River's Rest- Solhaven-Cairnfang Uplands, Bog, where the Shelfae and panthers are.

Icemule: Dabbing's Family Special Tart Teras Island: Lost Dogwater Ale Pinefar: Sweetfern Tea

EPHLOX MOSS: Heals fractured and bleeding and the bleeding on missing limbs, resulting minor after the bleeding is stopped must be healed with ambrominas leaf. Grows best in a cold wet environment with ample sunlight, along stream banks and growing on tree bark. Outside Wehnimer's by the bridge, Flynth River, Flynth Lake

Icemule: Frog's Bone Porridge Teras Island: Golden Goose Ale Pinefar: Sweetfern potion

CACTACAE SPINE: Heals minor scars on limbs. Grows in desert like conditions. Can be found Outside the Abandoned Inn, the garden in River's Rest.

Icemule: Elk Fat Gel Teras Island: Bearded Ladies Ale Pinefar: Manroot Tea

CALAMIA FRUIT: Heals Mangled limbs, resulting minor scar must be healed away with cactacae spine. Tends to grow in very warm moist climates. There is no proven documentation that this herb has ever been successfully foraged. Calamia fruit is the only known fruit that can be bundled.

Icemule: Walrus Blubber Teras Island: Mad Mutt Frothy Ale Pinefar: Manroot Potion

SOVYN CLOVE: Restores missing limbs, all wounds to the area must be healed before the limb can be regrown using the clove. Surety lists no known places in which to find the cloves but mentions that they must be dried in the sun. I did tend to find them in sunny areas. Upper Trollfang-foothills, outside the Abandoned Inn, The grasslands on the way to Solhaven and the garden in River's Rest. As a side note this is the only foragable item for which you will gain experience foraging, it isn't lot of experience but it is still experience, I got 5 off node.

Icemule: Rock Ptarmigan Feathers Teras Island: Captain Peg Leg Ale Pinefar: Angelica Root Potion

WOLIFREW LICHEN: Heals minor nervous system injuries. Grows in cold, dark areas. Can be found outside but cold wet caves are more likely. Lower Dragonsclaw, Coastal Cliffs/wrecked village, Tor Aganrhic and the silverback orc area in Icemule. I haven't had to forage this much and haven't mad a huge effort to do so as it is the most frequently dropped herb by critters, in my personal experience.

Icemule: Leaftoe's Lichen Tart Teras Island: Orc's Head Ale Pinefar: Red Lichen Tea

TORBAN LEAF: Heals minor nervous system scars. Found only in cold climates <shrug>. Outside east gate, Upper Trollfang/Danjirland, Lower Trollfang/heading towards Hobgoblin Land, Lyserian Hills, the Garden in River's Rest, outside the sanctuary in River's Rest, Cairnfang Uplands on the trail to Solhaven, Zalatoph Base, Cairnfang Forest, Coastal Pine Forest in Solhaven. Seems fairly easy to find.

Icemule: Ma Leaftoe's Spiced Torban Tart Teras Island: Miner's Muddy Ale Pinefar: Valerian Root Tea

WOTH FLOWER: Heals major nervous system scars. Grows most often in hot, humid, dark climates such as a rain forest. There is no proven documentation that this herb has ever been successfully foraged.

Icemule: Flower-shaped Tart Teras Island: Draco's Dream Ale Pinefar: Valerian Root Potion

ALOEAS STEM: Heals Major neck and head injuries. Tends to grow in colder, wet areas, such as along riverbanks. Can be found by the bridge outside of town, Flynth Lake, and along the Flynth River.

This seems to be a fairly rare herb, and slow growing, Surtey does mention that the tree is rare.

Icemule: Ram's Bladder Teras Island: Dark Swampwater Ale Pinefar: Feverfew Potion

HAPHIP ROOT: Heals minor head and neck scars. Typically grows in hot, humid conditions and requires large amounts of moisture. I have yet to find this one either, rainforest again? There is no proven documentation that this herb has been successfully foraged.

Icemule: Sparrowhawk Pie Teras Island: Agrak's Amber Ale Pinefar: Pennyroyal Tea

BASAL MOSS: Heals minor body and eye (organ) wounds. Grows in temperate climates, on the bark of deciduous trees. Found in Upper Trollfang near the pine tree, Glatoph, Coastal cliffs/Overgrown path, Lyserian Hills, Zalatoph Base, The garden in River's Rest as well as outside the sanctuary there, Cairnfang Pine Forest, Cairnfang forest, Coastal Pine Forest in Solhaven, and the Coastal woods in Solhaven.

Icemule: Tundra Grass Teras Island: Mama Dwarf's Ale Pinefar: Gingko Nut tea

POTHINIR GRASS: Heals Major body and eye (organ) wounds. Difficult to find, hot humid areas with large amounts of sunlight. Can be found in the GY bog, Lower trollfang/forest, Upper Trollfang by the lightning tree, the garden in River's Rest and the bog in Solhaven.

Icemule: Musk Ox Tart Teras Island: Aged Schooner Ale Pinefar: Ginko Nut Potion

A note of caution to young rangers out there foraging for fun and useful herbs... It is possible to poison yourself while foraging and it can kill you if you can't run to town or eat that acantha fast enough. I was reminded of this when I got a poisoning trying to double check some of my info for this guide, 10 per round dissipating 2 per round.... When you are young this can be devastating.

There are other foragable things out the if you want to look, sticks- I have found them in most places with trees, Tkaro root (I admit I haven't given this any priority) it can be found in the garden in River's Rest. Flowers, small roses, daisies and spearmint leaf can also be found in the garden in River's Rest. There are some other nice flowers foragable in some gardens around town too; sunflowers, lilies and snapdragons come to mind, and there are others as well. Perhaps as I get older and am able to forage safely in other areas I will be able to add to this list. I have found however the only things Rangers forage for after they get the spell (119) to make their own herbs, are sticks. So... I assume this will be mostly for younger rangers, and others who wish to save a few silvers at the herb shop. We all eventually do the inevitable; ring into our hunting grounds sitting, drop a spell or two in the middle of a hunt, or get stunned by one of the older critters that now wander to our hunting grounds. Having a well-stocked herb satchel has saved my own and my fellow hunters lives (strangers as well). Don't think it can happen to you huh? I'll be standing there with my stocks of herbs ready when it does, of course I'll snicker, who wouldn't?

Thank you,

In retrospect: Towards the end of my writing of this Foraging guide I was given a copy of Lord Trachten’s Forage Location & Availability Tome. I wrote the kind forwarder of this Tome that it had helped me a lot. While it did help me in understanding more about foraging I didn’t include any of the material from it in this guide. I had decided to make this guide only a usage and locations guide. I did check over the places that he had listed but it was nearly identical to the one from Taru’s guide so I didn’t add a credit. Well this is that credit for any info I may inadvertently put in this guide from that one. My thanks to Lord Trachten for his well written Tome.
